When it was time for Mr. Hoover to go to basic training, he went to Camp Wheeler, Georgia, which was near Macon, Georgia. There he was trained to fight in the Pacific and how to live in the jungle.
Mr. Hoover had a German friend that was a prisoner of war. He worked in their motor pool and Mr. Hoover was able to practice his German with him. Mr. Hoover’s friend even gave him part of his Luftwaffe uniform as a souvenir.
